Takes, pickups and continuity
Everything below is recorded on the Shot view, against the shot it belongs to. None of it is typed twice and none of it has to be reconstructed at wrap.
Logging a take
Tap Add take 3, or whatever number is next. The takes count up as the crew counts them, so take three on the sheet is take three here.
Circling one
Hold Add take for about half a second and the take lands already circled. The button says Add circled while you are holding it, so you can feel whether it worked without looking down. A take already in the list is circled by tapping its number.
One take is circled per shot. Circling a second moves the circle rather than adding one, because "the take we used" is a single answer.
The term comes from paper camera reports, where the take to be printed was circled on the sheet. What a circled take means covers the history if you want it.
Roll and card
Each take has an optional Roll and Card field. They are one tap away and never required. Fill them in on the takes that matter and the editor's handover carries them.
Pickups
Mark a shot as a pickup and write the reason: focus soft on the circled take, plane overhead, we lost the light. The reason is the point. A list of shots owed with no reasons attached is a list somebody has to relitigate in the morning.
Pickups have their own filter on the day and their own section on the wrap, so the morning starts with a list rather than an argument.
Flags
Flag an issue is for something that went wrong and is not a pickup: a continuity break somebody should know about, a sound problem, a prop that was never right. Flagged shots get their own section on the wrap. No reason is captured on a flag, so if the why matters, write it in the note.
Notes for the edit
A shot takes a free note aimed at editorial. It travels to the editor's bible and never to a client link.
Continuity photographs
Take a photograph with the device already in your hand and it attaches to the shot it has to match, rather than landing in a camera roll with four hundred others.
- The preview appears from the device's own copy the instant the shutter closes.
- The picture is shrunk on the device before it is sent, which is what makes it quick on one bar of signal. It is still far more detail than you need to match a prop.
- With no signal the thumbnail turns red and waits. Tap it to try again once you have a bar or two. It does not survive the tab closing, so keep the page open until it has gone.
